| About Pollen Count |
 |
| Each morning, Monday through Friday, technicians at
the Atlanta Allergy and Asthma Clinic perform the sampling procedure
that gathers the information needed to determine the pollen count.
Once determined, this information is reported to area newspapers,
radio stations, television stations and posted on both the clinic
hotline and web site. |

| The sampling procedure is simple. Staff members cover
one side of a glass rod with silicone grease, secure it in the rotorod
sample collector, and raise it to rooftop level. At that level it
is set to spin for 30 seconds out of every ten minutes, or 72 minutes
during every 24 hours. "The spinning time can be critical during
peak pollen season. It must be carefully timed for accurate sampling,"
according to Marie McFalls, who has been collecting and analyzing
pollen data at the Atlanta Allergy & Asthma Clinic since 1987.
After the rod is removed it is stained, and is then examined under
a microscope. The technician identifies the pollen grains and mold
spores by size, shape and individual characteristics and, finally,
uses a mathematical formula to calculate the daily pollen count. For
