Life Saving Injectable Epinephrine – Options Available

Saturday, January 7, 2017

Atlanta Allergy & Asthma News
Anaphylaxis is a severe, potentially fatal allergic reaction. Patients with life threatening allergies need immediate access to epinephrine, the only medication that can quickly reverse the symptoms of anaphylaxis. For patients at risk for anaphylaxis, there are now options in injectable epinephrine:

-EpiPen Auto Injector (Mylan) Patient Assistance Programs and Savings cards available here.

-Authorized generic for EpiPen (Mylan.) This is the same product as the brand name EpiPen. If you have a prescription for EpiPen, it is also valid for the authorized generic for EpiPen. More information here.

-Epinephrine injection, USP auto-injector (authorized generic for Adrenaclick). This generic is available at most pharmacies; however, CVS recently launched a program that offers a reduced rate on the 2-pack. Find more information here and here.

Additionally, Auvi-Q, another brand of injectable epinephrine, is reported to be re-entering the market in February of 2017. They just announced an “Affordability” program which you can learn more about here.

Patients should speak with their allergist regarding the best fit for their specific needs. There are differences in how these devices operate and the patient should be trained and comfortable using their device of choice. Call your Atlanta Allergy & Asthma office if you have any questions or concerns.
