New Test for Peanut Allergic Patients Now Available in AAAC Clinics

In an effort to bring you the latest advancements in medical care, we want to make you aware of a new diagnostic test that has recently been cleared by the FDA and is available at our clinics for patients with peanut allergy.

The uKnow Peanut test is different from other forms of diagnostic testing for peanut allergy. Traditional testing measures IgE antibodies in the blood to all the proteins found in the peanut.  IgE antibodies are responsible for allergic reactions. Recent studies have shown that not all of the peanut proteins are equal in terms of their likelihood to cause a severe reaction.  This new test can show us which proteins you are reacting to, giving us more information regarding the likelihood of a severe reaction to peanut.

In some cases your peanut allergy will be confirmed by this test, showing you are at high risk for a reaction. In other cases we may find that you are at low risk for severe reactions. Either way, this is good information to have.

For a limited time, the company that developed the uKnow Peanut test, Thermo Fisher Scientific, is offering this test to our patients at a reduced price of $150. After the introductory period, the cost for this new test will be $300.  Atlanta Allergy & Asthma Clinic is not receiving any compensation from Thermo Fisher Scientific for offering this test, but we do believe this test will help provide our patients with more accurate information regarding your risk for severe reactions to peanut.

This specialized peanut protein component test is not currently covered by insurance, but may be paid for with your FSA/HSA account and you are encouraged to submit paperwork to your insurance company for coverage. You may receive partial reimbursement or no reimbursement and this will vary by insurance plan.

The special pricing will be available from August 27th through September 26th.
You should schedule an office visit to discuss the test, pick up the kit and get the information on where to have your blood drawn. We will let you know the results and whether a change in management is appropriate. When calling our scheduling line (770 953-3331) let them know you are scheduling an appointment for the uKnow Peanut test. For more info on the test, go to uKnowPeanut.com
