Atlanta Allergy & Asthma — the largest allergy practice in Georgia — is thrilled to share the news that the U.S Food and Drug Administration has approved neffy, the first epinephrine nasal spray for emergency treatment of anaphylaxis.
The approval offers patients at risk for a severe allergic reaction a needle-free method to quickly treat life-threatening reactions, potentially reducing barriers for both children and adults who weigh more than 66 pounds. Neffy is an alternative to injectable epinephrine devices such as EpiPen, Auvi-Q, and several generic options, all delivering epinephrine with needles.
“Epinephrine must be administered quickly to reverse the symptoms of anaphylaxis,” says Dr. David Tanner, Medical Director at Atlanta Allergy & Asthma. “Often people, particularly those with children, hesitate in administering injectable epinephrine products. Our hope is that additional treatment options for patients allergic to foods, medications, and insect venom will ultimately save lives. We look forward to offering this option to our at-risk patients.”
The new epinephrine nasal spray is expected to be widely available within eight weeks. Because neffy isn’t yet included on prescription formularies, prior authorization will be needed for insurance coverage. ARS Pharma says the cash price for a pack of two neffy sprayers will be $199. With coupons, most people with commercial insurance will pay about $25.
A representative from Atlanta Allergy & Asthma is available to discuss the approval of neffy and how it will positively impact emergency treatment of anaphylaxis.
