Worsening Pollen Seasons and the Path to Relief

Pollen seasons are nothing to sneeze at, and Atlanta Allergy & Asthma continues to be a trusted authority on pollen and its related health issues. A recent example is a pair of segments that aired on The Weather Channel in spring 2026

In these segments, Atlanta Allergy & Asthma's Dr. Mary S. Georgy discussed how pollen seasons are becoming longer and more intense each year. Allergy sufferers are increasingly affected not only during the spring but throughout much of the year as seasonal allergens persist across multiple seasons. Dr. Georgy also shared expert guidance on effective treatment options to help patients find lasting relief from their allergy symptoms.

The first segment took a look at the continuing evolution of pollen season. “It is true that the pollen season is now extending to be longer and starting sooner,” Dr. Georgy explained. “And also the pollen count is increasing.”

According to The Weather Channel’s report, warmer springs serve as a trigger, allowing trees to abruptly dump large amounts of pollen. The quick surge impacts the human immune system, taking people who otherwise only experience mild symptoms and violently pushing them past their immune threshold. This causes them to experience a quick, acute onset of severe symptoms they weren’t having just moments before.

The second segment explored medical solutions. Dr. Georgy discussed allergen immunotherapy, which exposes the body to small, increasing amounts of the allergen causing their symptoms. Over time, their immune systems become more tolerant, thereby reducing allergic symptoms. Instead of using medication to temporarily mask symptoms, allergen immunotherapy, either shots or drops, offers long-lasting relief.

“Pollen season is not going anywhere, and people don't have to suffer... a board-certified allergist can help tailor the treatments for the patients and that they can mitigate their symptoms,” Dr. Georgy said.
