Atlanta Allergy & Asthma Allergist Dr. Lily Hwang Featured on 11Alive Discussing Smoke and Pollen Impact on Air Quality

Updated on Monday, May 18, 2026

As smoke from South Georgia wildfires moves into metro Atlanta during peak pollen season, air quality concerns are rising. Atlanta Allergy & Asthma allergist Dr. Lily G. Hwang, M.D. was recently featured on 11Alive to discuss how this combination can intensify respiratory symptoms.

During the segment, Dr. Hwang explained that the overlap of wildfire smoke and high pollen levels can create a compounded effect on the airways, especially for individuals with asthma, allergies, or other respiratory conditions. These particles can easily enter the lungs, increasing irritation and triggering more severe symptoms.

She also emphasized the importance of monitoring air quality levels and taking precautions on high-risk days, such as limiting outdoor exposure and reducing activities that may increase inhalation of irritants.

Watch the full 11Alive segment to learn more about how to protect your health during periods of poor air quality.
