Why You Really Need to Get Your Flu Shot

Flu Shot Essential for Patients with Asthma, Chronic Sinusitis, and Immunodeficiency: Importance of Vaccinations, Hygiene, and Updated Care Plans

Updated on Thursday, August 29, 2024

As we head into another respiratory illness season, new variants of COVID-19, influenza, and other viruses are expected to circulate in our communities. These infections can be more than just inconvenient, they can trigger asthma attacks, worsen allergy and asthma symptoms, and in some cases lead to pneumonia or other serious respiratory illnesses.

The good news is that there are steps you can take now to protect yourself, your family, and those around you. One of the most effective ways is by staying up-to-date on all recommended vaccinations, including influenza, COVID-19, and for certain groups, the RSV vaccine.

Why the Flu Shot Matters

Each year, the influenza virus changes, which is why annual vaccination is necessary. Even if you’ve had the flu in the past, getting your flu shot helps your body build immunity against the strains most likely to circulate this season.

The flu vaccine is recommended for most children and adults, but it is especially important for people with:

  • Asthma
  • Chronic sinusitis
  • Immunodeficiency or other chronic conditions

For patients 65 years and older, the high-dose flu vaccine is recommended, as it provides stronger protection in older adults. This vaccine is available through primary care providers and many local pharmacies.

Flu Vaccines at Atlanta Allergy & Asthma

Flu shots for the 2025/2026 season are now available at all 19 Atlanta Allergy & Asthma locations.

  • No appointment is necessary for current patients.
  • Children as young as 6 months can receive the standard flu shot.
  • Patients receiving allergy shots can safely get the flu vaccine 30 minutes after their allergy injection.
  • Please note: The intranasal FluMist vaccine is not recommended for patients with asthma, immunodeficiency, or other chronic respiratory conditions and is not given in our offices.

Protecting Your Family and Your Community

Getting vaccinated doesn’t just protect you, it also helps reduce the spread of illness to family members, coworkers, classmates, and those who may be more vulnerable to severe disease.

By lowering the overall number of flu and COVID-19 cases, we also help keep our healthcare system from becoming overwhelmed during the busy fall and winter months.

Stay Healthy This Season

In addition to vaccinations, you can strengthen your defenses by:

  • Following good hygiene practices (frequent handwashing, covering coughs and sneezes)
  • Keeping your allergy and asthma treatment plans up to date
  • Scheduling a check-up with your allergist before peak illness season

A strong baseline of allergy and asthma control, combined with the protection of vaccinations, gives your body the best chance to fight off infections and stay healthy.
